Festival History

2016 Festival headlining authors, Ron Carlson and Richard Blanco, with poet Teri Grimm

Since 1994, the Douglas Anderson Writers’ Festival has focused on engaging emerging writers, as well as reaching out to the greater writing community in the Southeast. A large percentage of our attendees are secondary students enrolled in the creative writing program at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, attendees from area colleges and universities, and community writers in the Northeast Florida region. The mix of ages and levels of experience makes for lively and engaging sessions.

Over the course of many years the festival has welcomed writers of national and international acclaim. Our keynote speakers have included:

  • Award-winning novelist, Margaret Atwood
  • Award-winning novelist, Joyce Carol Oates
  • Pulitzer Prize winning novelist, Richard Ford
  • Former U.S. Poet Laureate, Billy Collins
  • Former U.S. Poet Laureate,Natasha Trethewey
